Harderwijk is a small historic town in the heart of the Netherlands. I had a chance to visit this beautiful town last week. We walked along the boulevard and the town centre and I snapped some photos, of course.

Springtime couple shoot: Penny & Marnix

Spring is without a doubt a magical time. Flowers and trees start to bloom. The colours are absolutely breathtaking. The only problem is that those moments are fleeting. That’s why I’m very grateful to have been able to capture some of this spring’s beauty here in Ede. Everything came together for this shoot. Even though it rained in the morning, it turned out to be gorgeous weather later in the afternoon. Magnolia trees were in perfect bloom. Not to mention the fact that I got the sweetest couple in front of my camera.

Steal like an artist

“Steal Like an Artist: 10 things nobody told you about being creative” by Austin Kleon is the ultimate must read for anyone pursuing a creative career. It’s a fast engaging read, filled with doodles and timeless quotes. But don’t let the breezy style of this book (or its small size) fool you. While it’s short and easy to read, it’s full of amazing advice, inspiration and ideas. It’s brief (I devoured it cover to cover in less than two hours) but to the point and packed with insights that you can think over and return to later. I know I will read it over and over again.

This book is a celebration of creative influence and is a prompt to just get out there and make stuff. Kleon writes: “Nobody is born with a style or a voice. It’s in the act of making things and doing our work that we figure out who we are. Don’t wait until you know who you are to get started.” This idea alone gave me a boost of confidence and filled me with hope that the years of hard work, rigorous practice, continuous study and occasional failure will be rewarded by uncovering my unique voice in the process.

Another one of my favorite bits from the book goes like this: “If we’re free from the burden of trying to be completely original, we can stop trying to make something out of nothing, and we can embrace influence instead of running away from it.” This thought made me realize that nothing comes from nowhere and we are, in fact, “the sum of our influences” and “a mashup of what we choose to let into our lives.”
